Lawrence Earns All-Conference Nod By SoCon Coaches & Media
CHARLESTON, SC March 5, 2013 – College of Charleston’s Andrew Lawrence (London, England) was honored by the league’s head coaches as the Southern Conference announced the 2013 men’s basketball postseason awards on Tuesday.
Lawrence, a 6-foot-1 senior point guard and 2012 London Olympian, earned his first career nod on the All-Conference Team. He currently ranks fourth in the league in assists (3.9 apg), seventh in steals (1.4 spg), sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and ninth in minutes played (32.1).
A two-time Bob Cousy Award candidate given annually to the nation’s top point guard, Lawrence has scored in double figures in nine of the team’s last 10 league games. He became the 30th player in school history to reach the 1,000-career point mark and turned in his second consecutive 100+ assist season this year.
As the youngest member of the Great Britain National Team and one of only two collegians among the 12 countries competing in The Games, he helped his country to its first-ever Olympic win over China in tournament pool play. Lawrence currently ranks 26th all-time in career scoring with 1,151 career points to date, seventh all-time in career three-pointers made (203) and 10th all-time in career assists (384).
For the second year in a row, he was also recognized by the league’s media on the All-Conference Second Team.
Davidson’s Jake Cohen was named the 2013 Player of the Year, while head coach Bob McKillop was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Samford’s Tim Williams was named the league’s Freshman of the Year and Appalachian State’s Nathan Healy was tabbed the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
The 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament begins on Friday, March 8, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The championship game is scheduled for Monday, March 11, at 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.
