#58 SOUTH FLORIDA 6, UNCW 1

WILMINGTON, NC March 1, 2013 – No. 58 South Florida captured the doubles point and then added five singles wins to down UNCW, 6-1, in non-conference women’s tennis action Friday at the UNCW courts.

The nationally-ranked Bulls took the first leg of a two-match northern swing to improve to 5-3 on the season. UNCW is now 4-3 in Evan Clark’s first season with the program.

UNCW got off to a good start in doubles when the No. 3 tandem of Alyssa Ritchie and Christine Kharkevich rolled past USF’s Paula Montoya and Fanny Fracassi, 8-2. But the Bulls picked up wins at the top two spots to clinch the doubles point.

The Bulls increased their lead to 2-0 in singles play as Kayla Rissolo handed Kelly Cameron her first loss of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 position. Kharkevich then narrowed the lead to 2-1 by dispatching Alessandra Bonte, 6-1, 6-3, for UNCW’s lone singles victory.

USF then closed out the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Loreto Alonso-Martinez trimmed Christina Riley, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 2 position and Danielle Mills recorded the clincher by breezing past Ritchie, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3.

At the top of the lineup, junior Angie Sekely of UNCW battled hard before losing, 6-2, 6-2, to 78th-ranked Katie Vasenina.

The Seahawks embark on a two-match swing to Indiana and face IU’s Hoosiers Sunday at 5 p.m., followed by a date with Butler in Indianapolis on Wednesday.
