LEADING OFF
College of Charleston heads up the road to Charleston Southern for the first midweek contest of the season after taking two of three from Xavier on opening weekend.
The Cougar pitching staff performed well, allowing only five earned runs and maintaining a 4.3/1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Cougars struggled defensively with eight total errors leading to five unearned runs.
Offensively, College of Charleston only produced one home run, a solo shot from Brandon Murray, but three players hit over .400 as Murray, Ben Boykin and Gunnar Heidt all had strong weekends at the plate.
Fans should continue to check CofCSports.com and @CofCBaseball with updates to time and game schedule as rainy weather is in the forecast for tomorrow’s game.
ON AIR
College of Charleston fans can listen to the game for free through the Charleston Sports Network on CofCSports.com. Baseball media relations director Will Bryan will be providing play-by-play coverage for all of the early season road games.
SERIES VS. CHARLESTON SOUTHERN
College of Charleston is 41-15 all-time against Charleston Southern. Last year’s road matchup against the Buccaneers was never completed due to rain and scheduling. The Cougars won the home game, 3-2, in extra innings after Brandon Murray hit a game-tying solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Daniel Aldrich scored Cody Martin on an infield groundout in the 10th inning.
SCOUTING THE BUCCANEERS
Charleston Southern enters Tuesday’s game after taking two of three from Eastern Kentucky over the weekend. Bobby Ison and John Faircloth led the way offensively with five hits apiece and a combined six RBI. The Bucs’ pitching staff posted an ERA of 5.04, walking 16 batters and striking out 31.
OPENING STRONG
After CofC’s series victory over Xavier on opening weekend, the Cougars are now 14-1 in season-opening series under head coach Monte Lee. With Murray’s solo homer on Sunday, Charleston has also hit a home run in every season-opening series for the last decade and beyond.
