Gamecocks Win 10 in Final Indoor Home Meet

South Carolina travels to SEC Indoor Championships next weekend

COLUMBIA, SC Feb. 16, 2013 – The South Carolina track and field program collected 10 wins in a home indoor meet on Saturday. The wins were a part of 25 top-five marks on the day. Nine Gamecocks recorded personal or collegiate bests in the meet.

For the fourth time this season, senior Breanna Radford set a new shot put PR and moved up in the Gamecock record book. With her throw of 52’8 (16.05m), Radford won the women’s shot put section and moved into a tie for fourth with Lisa Misipeka (1997) on the all-time South Carolina indoor shot put list. Redshirt sophomore Kaysee Sullivan took second with a 43’2 ¼ (13.16m). Radford took second in the women’s weight throw, throwing 57′ (17.37m). Sullivan finished one spot behind her teammate with a toss of 48’10 (14.88m).

Sophomore Kendall Kee was the top qualifier and won the finals of the men’s 55-meter dash. In the prelims, Kee ran a 6.33, which falls just short of the South Carolina top-10 in the event. In the finals, Kee recorded a 6.38 to take the win. Sophomore Chris Walker and freshman Brandon Sanders also advanced to the finals. Walker ran a personal-best 6.53 in the finals to take third with sanders taking fourth at 6.55.

On the women’s side, freshman Gabrielle Gray had a big day in the 55-meters. Gray was the top qualifier in prelims and ran a collegiate best of 7.15 in the finals to take the section and her first collegiate win. Sophomores Ahytana Johnson and Lauren Ellis accompanied her to the finals. Johnson also recorded a collegiate best in the finals, running a 7.23 to take third. Ellis finished ninth in the finals.

In the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Dondre Echols and Jermaine Collier finished 1-2. Collier was the top qualifier, running 7.92, but Echols crossed first in the finals with a 7.58. Collier finished second in the finals with a time of 7.86. Senior All-American Kierre Beckles qualified for the women’s 55-meter hurdles, but did not run in the finals.Junior Nigel Redic and Paris Smalls finished 1-2 in the men’s 400-meter with times of 53.22 and 53.64, respectively. Sophomore Kevin Keating collected the win in the men’s 800-meters with a time of 2:03.68.

In the women’s distance races, all three Gamecocks recorded collegiate bests. Freshman Alex Mullin won her first race in the Garnet and Black in the mile run with a time of 5:35.19. In the 3,000-meters, freshmen Stephanie Berger and Brandy Wybersky combined for a 1-2 finish. Berger ran a 10:35.66 for her first win while Wybersky recorded a 10:50.34.

Redshirt junior Tylar Mangan won the women’s pole vault with a personal best 11’11 ¾ (3.65m) for her first collegiate win. Also recording their first collegiate win was freshman Jeffrey Linta. Linta cleared 14’5 ¼ (4.40m) for the win.

In the men’s weight throw, redshirt sophomore Walker Selby set a new personal best, throwing 56’9 ¼ (17.30m) to finish second in the section. Selby’s classmate Andrew Seay finished behind him in third with a throw of 56′ ½ (17.08m).

The Gamecocks will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., for the SEC Indoor Championships next weekend. Competition beings on Fri., Feb. 22.
