Improvements at Althea Gibson Tennis Complex in Wilmington, NC
Wilmington, NC Feb. 11, 2013 – Recently completed improvements at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex include the resurfacing of 8 of the 19 tennis courts along with the installation of two shaded cabanas. Four out of the eight resurfaced courts include additional lines that will also help teach the game of tennis to young players. The courts were painted in US Open color scheme to coordinate with the other 11 courts at the facility.
Tari Ann Toro-Steinmetz, Althea Gibson Tennis Complex Manager notes “The eight original courts at Empie Park were in rough shape prior to the resurfacing. Now that the resurfacing has been completed, the courts are getting excellent use and we are receiving great feedback from the public. We are most appreciative of the generosity of the USTA National and Southern Section and the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association for their contributions to this project. We also would like to thank the Wilmington Tennis Ladder for their donation of the two, shaded cabanas for the resurfaced courts.
About the funding:
The Resurfacing Project totaled $30,000. Funding was provided through grants from the USTA National and Southern Section in the amount of $20,000; $5,000 was contributed by the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association, and the remaining $5,000 was funded by the City of Wilmington. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder also donated 2 shaded cabanas in the amount of $4,500 that will add extra seating and consistency to the complex.
