ECU Pirates Defeat Richmond At The Indoor Tennis Center

ECU improved to 6-1 overall with a 5-2 win over the Spiders Sunday

GREENVILLE, NC Feb. 10, 2013 – The East Carolina men’s tennis team won its forth consecutive home match to start the season with a 5-2 victory over Richmond at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center Sunday.

The Pirates improved to 6-1 on the season and will look to remain unbeaten at home when they return to the court Saturday to take on Appalachian State.

For the third-straight match, the Pirates got out to a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. Sophomore Damien Brenard and senior John Schmitt won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, while sophomores Nicolas Soriano and Patriek Wolterbeek battled to an 8-6 victory at No. 3.

Senior Joran Vliegen improved to 7-0 at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ethan Dunbar. Soriano also earned a straight sets victory at No. 3 singles, defeating Paul Nahon III 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Colin Roller posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position over Justin Baker to clinch the match.

After winning the first set tiebreaker and being blank in the second set, Brenard earned a third set tiebreaker victory over Dylan Trent at No. 4 (7-6, 0-6, 1-0).

The Spiders’ Jesse Feder defeated Schmitt at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3) and Sebastian Fauchet beat Wolterbeek at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2) to capture Richmond’s lone two points.
