College of Charleston Cougars Place Second at SAISA Open

ST. PETERSBURG, FL Feb. 10, 2013 – In its spring season opener, the third-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team placed second at the two-day SAISA Open, a combined North Points and South Points event.

Florida won the two-division regatta with 49 overall points followed by CofC (52 points), host Eckerd College (84 points), South Florida (125 points) and Miami (175 points) to round out the Top 5 of the 20-team field.

 

In A-Division, sophomore skipper Chris Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) and freshman crew Katie Dowling (Coronado, Calif.) finished second behind the Gators with 28 points, while freshman skipper Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas) and junior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) tied Eckerd College for first place in B-Division with 24 points, but lost the tiebreaker with three first-place finishes over the course of the 12 races to Eckerd’s four first-place finishes.

 

The Cougars will compete this weekend at the USF Women’s Intersectional hosted by USF on Feb. 16-17 in Tampa, Fla., the Mendelblatt Team Race hosted by USF/Eckerd College on Feb. 16-17 in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the home-hosted Charleston Spring Coed Intersectional on Feb. 16-17 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
