ECU Men’s Tennis Takes Down Navy, 4-3

Pirates win doubles point and first three singles matches to clinch victory

ANNAPOLIS, MD Feb. 2, 2013 – The East Carolina men’s tennis team (4-1) defeated Navy 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. After clinching the doubles points, the Pirates won the first three singles matches to clinch victory.

Doubles play began with Joran Vliegen and Colin Roller disposing of Calvin Mark and Peter McDonald at the No. 1 position, 8-4. Patriek Wolterbeek and Nicolas Soriano quickly followed with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 over Tyler Burnett and Blake Daniel.

Soriano recorded the first singles win of the afternoon defeating McDonald at the No. 2 position in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Vliegen followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No.1 over Calvin. Damien Brenard then sealed the victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Blake at No. 4.

Navy (3-2) won the final three matches as Austin Jones first defeated John Schmitt at No. 2. Roller lost in three straights at No. 5 to Nicholas Gutsche 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 as did Wolterbeek at No. 6 to Tyler Burnett 6-3, 5-7, 1-0.

The Pirates will be back on the court Thursday, Feb. 7, as they host The Citadel. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
