“In our program, we hold our student-athletes to a very high standard,” Godwin said. “It’s unfortunate, but Tanner has been suspended from the team this season due to a violation of team policy.”

Merritt appeared in 25 games in 2012 posting a 2.91 ERA with a 3-6 record and eight saves.

The Pirates will start team workouts on Friday, Jan. 25 before opening the 2013 campaign at home against nationally-ranked Virginia on Friday, Feb. 15 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. (EST).
