Pine Knoll Shores, NC – The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores invites potential conservation ambassadors — also known as volunteers — to test the waters on Saturday morning, Feb. 2.
Drop by between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to talk to Aquarium staff and veteran volunteers about opportunities and benefits. Attendees also will be able to observe volunteers in action at the various stations around the Aquarium.
The Aquarium currently is recruiting interpreters for a new volunteer post to help visitors get a bird’s-eye view of the salt marsh. Interpreters staffing the salt marsh overlook share knowledge about herons, egrets and other creatures visible from the shaded deck.
Interpreters also are needed for the two popular touch pools. At the Tidal Touch Pool, interpreters offer insight into the life cycles of horseshoe crabs, spider and hermit crabs, ocean snails and other invertebrates. Skate and Ray Encounters interpreters share the joy of touching these gentle creatures. Volunteers also assist in visitor education, exhibit interpretation, helping with special events throughout the year and a variety of other ways.
Volunteers say their time spent on the Aquarium team has many rewards. “Every time I volunteer at the aquarium, I discover something new and interesting about North Carolina’s aquatic life,” said Debbie Dunham, who has volunteered for three years. “Sharing these discoveries with Aquarium guests from all over the world is rewarding, inspiring and fun.”
Volunteers receive free Aquarium admission and discounts at the Aquarium Gift Shop and on special activities. No prior experience is necessary. Environmental education and animal handling training are provided, and flexible schedules are available. Anyone with an interest in North Carolina’s habitats and animals is encouraged to attend the open house. Advance registration is not required. If unable to attend or for more information, see the Aquarium website or contact Volunteer Coordinator Chris Carlin at 252-247-4003, ext. 286.
