New Hanover County Residents to Enjoy Free Family Fun Sundays

New Hanover County North CarolinaNew Hanover County, NC – Looking for something to do over the weekend? New Hanover County residents can enjoy unlimited family fun on the first Sunday of each month with admission free of charge to Airlie Gardens, Cape Fear Museum and the New Hanover County Arboretum. You can also visit any of our fabulous parks or local library branches where admission is always free.

Airlie Gardens, located on Airlie Road near Wrightsville Beach, is 67-acres of quintessential Southern gardens with access to Bradley Creek and 10-acres of freshwater lakes. Over 100,000 azaleas, 3,000 camellias, statuary, and the Historic Airlie Oak adorn the landscape. This once privately owned garden was purchased for the public by New Hanover County in 1999. Sunday hours of operation are 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Cape Fear Museum is located at 814 Market Street in historic downtown Wilmington. The Museum collects, preserves and interprets objects relating to the history, science and cultures of the Lower Cape Fear. Current exhibitions include Fragments of War. Explore the local experiences of the Civil War through the artifacts and documents that have survived to help us imagine what life was like during the conflict. Sunday hours of operation are 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

New Hanover County Arboretum, 6206 Oleander Drive, is a special 7-acres in the heart of New Hanover County where homeowners can see the variety of plants that grow in our coastal area as well as emerging trends in plant material. Cooperative Extension’s “horticulture laboratory”, the Arboretum has a very knowledgeable staff and many volunteers working to make the gardens beautiful and educational. Hours of operation are sunup to sundown.

Three branches of the New Hanover County Public Library are open on Sundays from 1 – 5 p.m.: Main Library located at 201 Chestnut Street in downtown Wilmington; Northeast Regional at 1241 Military Cutoff Road; and Myrtle Grove at 5155 South College Road.
