NC State golfers Choi, James Push Canada into Lead at Copa de las Americas

MIAMI, FL Jan. 4, 2013 – NC State golfers Augusta James and Albin Choi sent Team Canada into the lead after two rounds of the 2013 Copa de las Americas at the par-72 TPC Blue Monster Course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa.

The four-person Team Canada squad stands at 14-over 590, one shot better than Argentina, and two in front of Columbia.

Choi, a junior from Toronto, fired a 4-under 68 on Friday to record the lowest round of the day, and tie for the lowest of the tournament through 36 of 72 holes.

James, a sophomore from Bath, Ontario, carded a second-straight 4-over 76.

On the men’s side, Choi and Corey Connors are in third at 2-over-par, one shot behind Mexico for second, while Columbia leads at -2. Canada began the day 12 shots off the pace in eighth, but Choi and Connors combined to shoot -7 to climb up the leader board.

In the women’s competition, James and her playing partner, Brooke Mackenzie Henderson, remain tied for the lead with Argentina at 12-over-par. The United States is two strokes back in third.

On the individual leader board, Choi is fifth at even par, while James is seventh at 8-over.

The 2013 Copa de las Americas, conducted by the Americas Golf Association and hosted by the United States Golf Association, is a team event for amateurs in North, Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean. It consists of three 72-hole stroke-play competitions – overall, men and women – and the competitions end on Sunday.
