The ECU Men’s Golf Team Signs Three Prep Student-Athletes
GREENVILLE, N.C. Dec. 5, 2012 – Clayton Brown (Davidson, N.C.), Ryan Douglass (Leesburg, Va.), and Jackson Spires (Fayetteville, N.C.) have each signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Pirates starting with the 2013-14 season announced East Carolina Head Men’s Golf Coach Press McPhaul on Wednesday.
“Our goals are high at East Carolina,” McPhaul said. “The 2014 NCAA Championship is at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Kan., and we are going to work very hard to give our program every opportunity to be there. To get there, we must have talented, driven, hard-working guys, who respond to the adversity with resilience. We are confident that Clay, Ryan and Jackson have the talent, drive and resilience to contribute to our team reaching its goal.”
Brown, a senior at William A. Hough High School, led his school to back-to-back conference championships as junior and sophomore, while posting an undefeated league ledger. He led Hough to a fifth-place finish at the 2012 state high school championships. As a freshman he was part of the Lake Norman Charter School squad, which placed fifth at the state high school championships.
“Clay Brown has been gifted with some real athletic ability,” McPhaul stated. “He creates a lot of speed while appearing to swing effortlessly. He’s worked hard on his strength and athleticism over the past year and that hard work is paying dividends. The most exciting thing about Clay is that he has displayed a real knack for getting into the hunt for championships. He did that in several different locales in different parts of the country last year, so his game is portable and road-ready. He has closed the deal when he has been in position as well. He is an explosive athlete and a competitor.”
Douglass is a senior at Heritage High School. He won the MAPGA Spring Fling in April and qualified for Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA) Amateur Championships as well as the Suntrust State Open of Virginia. He also competed in the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Team Match Championships.
