Cougars Perform Well In First Day Of Wingate Fall Frenzy

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - College of Charleston performed well against tough competition in the first day of the Wingate Fall Frenzy in Charlotte, N.C.

With the men coming in as two-time defending champions, CofC saw a number of high finishes in the relay events and freestyle events.

College of Charleston finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay as Alex Wood, Zack Lambert, David Sherrier and Greg Karel combined for a time of 1:23.30 in the finals. The Cougars placed fourth in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:26.51, swum by Jackson Marine, Karel, Mike McCarthy and Sherrier.

Sherrier placed seventh in the 500 yard freestyle, the highest finish for CofC, with a time of 4:44.16. Jake Gregory (4:48.87) and Josh Shaffer (4:41.75) finished right behind him.

Karel posted a high finish in the 50 free sprint as he placed third with a time of 21.01. Wood finished right behind him with a mark of 21.06. In the 200 yard IM, sophomore Pablo Ortiz placed eighth with a time of 1:59.35.

Peter Gibbons won the three-meter diving competition with a score of 271.45. Michael Topitzer (189.95) and Victor Bennett (160.65) placed second and third.

On the women’s side, CofC placed first (3:51.70) and second (1:35.88) in the 400 medley and 200 medley, respectively.

Sarah Graif won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.05 and Jayme Groth placed second right behind her with a time of 23.54.

Gracie Herlong took sixth in the 200 IM (2:11.27) and Jackie Tully (2:14.00) came in seventh. Annie Berdusco led the CofC swimmers in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.96.

In the diving events, reigning CCSA Diver of the Week took a fourth-place finish in the one-meter dive with a score of 216.70.

The Fall Frenzy continues tomorrow and Sunday from Wingate.
