Cougars Cruise To 22-Point Victory at SAISA Fall Coeds
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The No. 2-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team cruised to a 22-point victory to claim its fourth-straight SAISA Fall Coed Championship title this past weekend on host Eckerd College’s home waters of Boca Ciega Bay.
The Cougars combined for 13 first-place finishes in 20 races across both divisions (28 points) to defeat in-district rivals South Florida (50 points), Eckerd College (72 points), Miami (72), Georgia Tech (106), UNC Wilmington (121), Florida (146), NC State (161), The Citadel (168), Clemson (202), Embry-Riddle (229) and New College (245).
In A-Division, senior All-American skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) led CofC to a first-place finish along with sophomore crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) and senior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.). In B-Division, senior skipper Chris Banholzer (Hartland, Wis.), senior crew Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and senior crew Brooks Clark (Newport Beach, Calif.) also led the Cougars to victory over second-place USF.
CofC will next host the SAISA/MAISA regatta on Nov. 3-4 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., while senior Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala) looks to capture his second individual national title as the team’s lone representative at the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals hosted by Cal Maritime on Nov. 2-4 in Long Beach, Calif.
