The Pirates will make first time appearances in six tournaments this season
GREENVILLE, N.C. — First time appearances in six tournaments highlight the 2012-13 men’s golf schedule for East Carolina, which will be looking to make its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship finals.
“As our program has improved, so has our access to premier events,” seventh-year head coach Press McPhaul said. “This season, we will play in tournaments hosted by some of the nation’s elite teams such as Auburn, Duke and Florida State. We will also have the opportunity to compete on two courses currently used by the PGA TOUR (TPC Sawgrass and Redstone).
“The blend of challenging courses and great fields will give us a barometer weekly on how we are progressing towards our goal of returning to the NCAA Championship finals and making it to match play in Atlanta.”
ECU will open the season Sept. 15-16 at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill before competing in the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va., Sept 24-25. The Pirates finished second at VCU last season after placing third in 2010. A week later, on Oct. 1-2, they will travel to Daufuskie Island, S.C. to compete in the Rees Jones Collegiate hosted by South Carolina.
The Pirates’ final two events of the fall will be held in “The Triangle.” Before concluding the season at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-20, ECU will compete in the Rod Myers Intercollegiate at the Duke University Golf Club, Oct. 13-14.
East Carolina will open the spring portion of the schedule at the Sea Best Seafood Intercollegiate in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. on Feb. 4-5. The tournament will be played on THE PLAYERS course at TPC Sawgrass, which is home of the PGA TOUR headquarters and annually hosts THE PLAYERS Championship.
Following their trip to northern Florida, the Pirates will make their debut in three consecutive events, the first of which will be the Redstone Collegiate Championships in Humble, Texas on Feb. 22-24 at the Redstone Golf Club, home of the PGA TOUR’s Shell Houston Open.
The Pirates then head to Auburn, Ala. and Tallahassee, Fla. for the Tiger Shootout (March 11-12) and the Seminole Intercollegiate (March 15-17) before returning to Wilmington, N.C. on March 24-25 to defend their 2012 Seahawk Intercollegiate Championship. ECU will wrap up the regular season at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, N.C. on April 6-7.
After a 14-day hiatus, ECU will compete at the 2013 Conference USA Championships at the Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark. The Pirates finished third in last year’s championship event.
East Carolina will be looking for its third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance in 2013. This year’s sites are Baton Rouge, La.; Columbus, Ohio; Fayetteville, Ark.; Pullman, Wash.; Tallahassee, Fla. and Tempe, Ariz.
The Pirates return a pair of starters, senior Zach Edmondson and junior Ryan Eibner, from last year’s team that advanced to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. ECU finished 26th overall in the event, after advancing out of the NCAA Southeast Regional with a second-place finish in Athens, Ga.
