Pirates Ranked Among Top Swimming Teams In The Classroom


East Carolina University (ECU) PiratesGREENVILLE, N.C. July 12, 2012 – The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) named the East Carolina men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads Scholar All-America Teams for the 2012 spring semester this week.

The ECU women compiled a 3.58 cumulative GPA during the reporting period for the award, ranking fourth in the nation among NCAA Division I programs behind Clemson (3.62), Alabama (3.62) and Northwestern (3.59).

The Pirates had eleven of their student-athletes make the Chancellor’s List with a 4.00 GPA during the spring semester and an additional nine earning a spot on the Dean’s List with six more on the Honor Roll.

The ladies squad finished just behind Clemson for the top combined GPA for both semesters. The Tigers posted a 3.58 GPA, one-hundredth of a point ahead of ECU (3.57). South Carolina (3.54), Alabama (3.50) and Northwestern (3.48) rounded out the top-5. During the 2011 fall semester, the Pirates were second in the country with a 3.56 GPA.

The ECU men were recognized as one of 69 Division I men’s teams with a team GPA of over 3.00 achieving a 3.02 mark during the spring semester. Eleven members of the team received academic honors from the University by registering a 3.00 GPA or higher.

The Team Scholar All-American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher for that semester.

The College Swimming Coaches Association is the oldest coaches organization in America. In addition to Scholar All American Awards, the CSCAA recognizes All American Swimmers and Divers at the national championships every year.
