Cougars Claim 7-0 Shutout Of Jacksonville State

College of Charleston Cougars - CofCANNISTON, Ala. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team claimed a 7-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at the Golden Springs Community Center.

The Cougars (4-3) swept the doubles point for the first time this season behind a pair of 8-1 victories by the No. 1 and No. 2 combinations of sophomore Jamie Harrell (Charleston, S.C.) and junior Irene Viana (Paris, France) and freshman Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.).

Freshman Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Olivia McMillan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) also contributed with an 8-5 win over JSU’s Kelly Tomlin and Aleksandra Cmilijic at No. 3 doubles.

CofC would later hand the Gamecocks (3-5) a sweep in singles, all in straight sets. Maddox defeated JSU’s top player Raisa Guasti, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 1 line followed by Falcone, who allowed one game to Raphaela Lima, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Meanwhile, Baker picked up her first career singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Kelly Tomlin at No. 6.

“We had a great time today,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “We want to thank Jacksonville State for their incredible hospitality. Coach (Steve) Bailey is one of the classiest coaches in the country. Our players adjusted well today against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions. It was good to get a victory in our first match away outdoors. I am also really proud of Grace Baker for picking up her first collegiate dual-match victory.”

The Cougars will continue their extensive spring break road trip next at Tulane on Tuesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. (ET) in New Orleans, La.
