NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes had this to say, “It sounds like today the music may have died in the North Carolina Democratic Headquarters. Their candidate-of-choice, Erskine Bowles, decided not to run despite immense pressure from the party bosses; Senator Phil Berger posted a monster fundraising number; and former Speaker Hackney decided to not seek re-election on his own terms.
Many Democrats in the state have chosen not to seek re-election for a variety of reasons. The one underlying reason that is common in all of their choices is perhaps they recognize how unpopular Obama is due to his failed record on jobs. Some have to be uncomfortable with the NC-Democratic Party’s radical shift to the liberal left. It could be they understand that their party’s use of hyperbole and fear is not productive towards creating solutions to the problems that facing the state. Maybe they understand that being paired on the ticket with Obama puts them at a distinct disadvantage, and they’ve chosen to pursue other careers as a result.
North Carolinians recognize and respect leaders like Phil Berger and Thom Tillis. They respect leaders that want to debate issues in a public forum, and take to statewide town hall forums to address issues with all citizens. Contrasted against Perdue who refuses to publish a public schedule and operates with a cloud of secrecy when controversy arises, it’s no surprise that Berger posted such a monster fundraising number.”
